I served with the people of Vietnam. I walked the rice paddies, hamlets, villages, and remote mud-walled outposts, witnessing their sorrows, hopes, and pain, and often sharing in them. Regardless of their initial views, all but a very few advisors came to be motivated by the uncomplicated conviction that freedom was preferable to Communist oppression.

James Lord, and he in turn introduced me to a surprisingly large staff consisting of a captain, two sergeants, and a corporal serving as clerk-typist.
